Increase your water consumption and enjoy the health benefits

Do you find it a struggle to guzzle down the recommended 8 glasses of water each day? I used to see it as a chore and come 8 pm, I realised I had not had enough for the day, and I'd scull a 500mL glass in the hope that it would balance the scales. Not advisable at all! So I decided to get creative.

After finally kicking my daily coffee habit I have become addicted to herbal teas. There is a whole world of herbs to choose from and they have significant therapeutic properties too. I now not only surpass my daily water expectation but enjoy the benefits of the herb properties as well. Then there are fruits such as lemons, limes, and oranges that you can add to flavour your water as well as fresh mint and ginger.

The following is a list of my other favourite herbal teas and alternatives to a glass of straight-up-water that are also always found in my kitchen cupboards.

Upon rising: Glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon and slices of ginger.
An invigorating drink that helps to stimulate the liver aiding the digestive system to eliminate waste products from the body easier as well as promoting your immune system purifying the blood improving circulation nourishing the skin and as a result of all this helping you to lose weight faster.


Rooibos Herbal Tea

Rooibos Herbal Tea is one of my favourites to sip on anytime during the day. It is packed full of vitamins and minerals has more antioxidants than green tea helps to improve your skin and complexion and is naturally caffeine-free.


Peppermint and Lemongrass Herbal Tea

I drink Peppermint and Lemongrass Herbal Tea helps to aid digestion and relieve digestive upsets. The perfect tea to sip on after lunch.


Echinacea Herbal Tea

Echinacea Herbal Tea is commonly known for its immune stimulating properties recognised as the herb of choice when helping combat influenza and other viral or bacterial infections. I like to but a jar of Echinacea tea and drink a cup a day in the lead up to winter to help prevent me from getting sick.


White Tea

If you don't mind having a little caffeine then White Tea is a must! It has an extremely high amount of antioxidants is excellent for the skin and complexion and may help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. A great mid-afternoon pick me up.



Then there's the good old trusty Chamomile that is known by all as the perfect night time herbal tea and rightfully so… it calms the mind and body and helps promote sleep.

In summer I like to brew a pot of herbal tea and then after it has cooled add cubes of ice. Refreshing, to say the least!


Coconut Water

One more alternative to water that I must mention is coconut water - the clear liquid inside young coconuts. Please don't confuse this with coconut milk that is bought in a can. According to Mortin Satin Chief of the United Nation's Food & Agriculture Organization “Coconut water is the very stuff of Nature biologically pure full of natural sugars salts and vitamins to ward off fatigue... and is the next wave of energy drinks BUT natural! It's a natural isotonic beverage with the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood. It's the fluid of life so to speak." If you exercise and sweat then I highly recommend rehydrating with coconut water. I practice Bikram Yoga and it's the only drink that genuinely makes me feel rehydrated after a 90-minute sweat.
