How to get rid of your muffin top

...And fit into your favourite jeans!

The biggest enemy of jeans is that dastardly muffin-top! For those of you who don't know a muffin top is, it's that extra fat around your belly that spills over the top of your jeans or shorts. If we wore corsets that fat would be pushed up to the bust area (hmmm… something to think about!).


There are many factors contributing to how your body deposits fat, which means there are many things you can do about it. How much exercise you do what you eat how much you sleep you get hormones genetics (ok you can't do anything about those!) all contribute to how much fat you have and where it hangs out on your body.

What would appear to be the obvious solution to remove the muffin top, is to jump in and do abdominal exercises like crunches and sit-ups. These will give you stability and help flatten your tummy giving you a better profile. Unfortunately, they won't specifically get rid of the flab over the top. The only way to get rid of your muffin top is to burn that fat with cardio (and eating fewer calories will help too).

 

Top five things to help you feel great in your jeans:

 

1. Don't kid yourself- get the right size

The first trick to avoiding muffin top is to wear jeans/shorts that fit you - not too tight around that midsection. If the choice is a smaller size (with muffin top) or a larger size (without)- go for the larger size every time. No one can tell what the number is but muffin-top is a dead giveaway that your jeans are too small.

 

2. Stand up straight

Part of the reason many people have a muffin top is poor posture. All that slouching allows your body to slump down into itself and smush everything out. Try consciously using perfect posture (shoulders back and down belly button toward your spine) for 5 minutes every hour- set your watch. Then try 10 minutes at a time. Eventually, you won't even have to think about it! Pilates will also help you improve your posture and regain the length in your torso.

 

3. Chill out and get some sleep

Stress and lack of sleep both contribute to fat being stored. Try meditation, relaxation and getting to bed earlier!

 

4. Think about what you eat

It's depressing when you're using those machines at the gym that tell you how many calories you're burning. You've been working your butt off for what seems like aeons, only to realise that you've burned up the equivalent of a piece of bread! The truth is you can never do enough exercise to make up for over-eating. Be conscious of everything you put in your mouth. It's a lot of work to try to burn it off. And if you're exercising to burn off that pack of Tim Tams, you're not even starting on getting rid of your muffin top!

 

5. Cardio cardio cardio - the right kind!

Bottom line - it's all about getting rid of the fat. If you want to get rid of your muffin top push yourself! That muffin top is not going to move if you plod along in your comfort zone. High-intensity cardio will increase your fitness faster and keep your metabolism up for longer. It's worth the effort. Try doing intervals or some of the fun and challenging workouts. 

Have a good night's sleep, work out hard and make healthy eating choices and that muffin top will melt away. Your reward for that hard work… looking good in your jeans!!
