Movember: Grow a mo for men's health!

Movember

Movember is an event held annually during the month of November, which involves growing a moustache to help raise awareness of men’s health issues: namely prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.

Movember had humble beginnings. It all started in 2003 when two mates from Melbourne were chatting about old fashion trends over a beer. At the time, the moustache had long been forgotten, along with other long-lost men’s fashion trends like flare pants and platform shoes. The two of them decided, somewhat jokingly at the time, that they’d bring it back.

Not long after, inspired by a friend’s mum who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to turn it into a campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer. They found 30 guys to participate in the challenge that year, each growing a mo and paying $10 towards men’s health.

Fast forward 18 years, and the Movember movement has grown into a global one, inspiring support from over 6 million men and women around the world. Since 2003, Movember has funded over 1,250 men’s health projects globally, all with the purpose of changing the face of men’s health for good.

Why is this so important?

On average, men die six years earlier than women do, and from largely preventable causes. Movember exists to help men live happier, healthier and stronger lives.

The three main areas of focus for Movember are mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Unchecked, prostate cancer rates will double over the next 15 years. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men aged 15-39 years of age, and across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides.

Movember are addressing this crisis on a global scale. They fund groundbreaking projects all over the world, raising awareness and funding research to accelerate change.

How you can get involved

There are multiple ways that you can get involved in Movember to help raise money which could save a man’s life, be that a father, a brother, a son, a friend or a partner.

Firstly, there’s four ways that you can fundraise for the cause:

  1. Grow a mo

The classic choice for men is to grow a mo for the course of the month to raise money. No matter what your growing capabilities are - patchy, lopsided or epic – your mo can help raise funds for men’s health. You can do this solo, or you can make a team with a group of mates or colleagues. Upload your mo-pics here (link to gallery once created)

  1. Move for Movember

Can’t grow a mo? No worries! You can also run or walk 60km over the course of the month. That’s 60km for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour, every hour across the world.

  1. Host a mo-ment

Get a group of friends together and host a fundraising event, virtual or in person. Have fun together for a good cause!

  1. Get creative!

There are no limits to the ways that you can help raise money for Movember. Whether it’s a grueling test of physical endurance or selling off raffle tickets, the world is your oyster! Get as creative as you like with your fundraising efforts.

You don’t have to fundraise yourself to contribute to the cause! You can still make a huge difference just by donating.

Here are a few ways you can do that:

  1. Give to a person or a team

If you have friends or colleagues that are participating in Movember, head to their donation page and donate as much as you like. You don’t need to donate much to make a difference, just give within your means. Every cent counts!

  1. Give monthly

If you’d like to keep supporting all of the amazing work Movember is doing, you can choose to give monthly. Regular donations help fund life-changing mental health programs, medical research, and innovative treatments for prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

  1. Make a once-off donation

A once off donation still does a whole lot of good for supporting men’s health. Your donation funds medical research, groundbreaking tests and trials, and innovative treatments.

Movember is a fun way to do good! So, do your bit to support men’s health and get growing, moving, or giving this Movember!
